A SUGGESTION OF NATURE

  • Our sense of self is defined by our mental and physical connection to our environment. The large drawings attempt to embody our mental sense of self- our basic instincts, the reality of ourselves and our morals - learned and ideal. These three components (id, ego and superego) illustrate how we emotionally connect to humanity- and these invisible connections transcend our physical limitations- they break barriers of age, race, sexuality, etc. I like to call these our shadow layers- we are all connected through the shadows.

The remainder of work identifies how we uniquely relate to the natural world through a physical sense of self. They are personal reflections of my sense of place in the world- a sensory reflection of my experience. These themes are shared within humanity, but each impression or experience is unique. For example, the way we see a cloud in the sky, leaves a unique impression based on our individual life experience. One person sees a bunny, the other a weather pattern, the other feels delight, and on and on. The impression of what resonates is what I relay through my drawings. Common themes in my drawings are magnetism or gravity, resonance or connection, isolation or alienation, and pleasure.
